FACTFILE  Main port: Sullom Voe (Shetland) (oil terminal).  Oil vessels: Oil rig  Supply vehicles: Bristow helicopters and oil supply ships (Aberdeen).  Some people think that Aberdeen is an oil terminal but it is just storing oil supply ships. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19cd1G VfIQA#

HOW THEY GET THE OIL When the oil rigs get in position they drill a hole in a rock. They then put a pipe into the hole in the rock and then they cement the pipe securely into the hole. Next they pump the oil in the pipes on the sea bed to Sullom Voe where all the oil is pumped to.

MAIN PORTS SULLOMVOEABERDEEN HARBOUR  The oil gets into Sullom Voe by the pipes on the sea bed. Sullom Voe is an oil terminal where they keep the oil before transported away on the cargo ships. Sullom Voe is chosen because of its deep waters and takes ships from 140 – 365 metres.  The Aberdeen harbour is not an oil terminal but it is used for a base for the oil supply ships that work in the north sea. For the north sea oil industry there are many different ships such as supply vessels, pipe laying, standby and research vessel's. In Aberdeen you have to pay lots of money to live or to stay because of the oil company's. The people there think that Aberdeen is so wealthy so they try to get more money of you.

OIL VESSELS OIL RIGS SUPPLY SHIPS  An oil rig is a platform which is either secured to the ocean floor or just floats about. On the bottom there is a drill which drills into an rock or just the sea bed to get all the oil out. They hold about 1000 men and the industry spends about £3,500,000 a month on wages.  The oil supply ships are used to bring supply's to the oil rigs. They are designed to be about 20 – 100 metres long. The main port for the supply ships is Aberdeen. They hold up to about 20 men and they take turns to go to the rigs.

PIPER ALPHA  On the 6 th of July 1988 the piper alpha blew up in the north sea. 167 men got killed and the were only 61 survivors. The damage of the rig would cost £1,700,000,000. The piper alpha is the worst disaster for lives and industry impact. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_qu ery=PIPER+ALPHA#
