A Breakthrough Technology for Energy Storage e-Zn
2
An Electrochemical Reactor - for storing electricity in zinc metal Energy storage section - $15/kWh Charging section - Zinc metal deposition Discharging section - Zinc metal dissolution Zinc + KOH e-Zn Structurally, the reactor has with three distinct sections: 1) a charging device on the top section to for energy absorption through zinc deposition, 2) a discharging device at the bottom section for energy delivery through zinc dissolution and 3) the mid section in between for energy storage.
3
1.Using zinc metal -Cheap -High energy density 2. Separation of energy storage from energy conversion - Low cost material (energy) storage 3.In-cell storage section - Simple & easily scalable Principles for Low Cost Zinc + KOH e-Zn
4
Key Advantage - Low Cost Capacity Expansion $15/kWh Zinc + KOH e-Zn
5
Zinc: $5 ( 2kg) KOH: $5 (6kg) Containment: $5 (polymer) Storage at $15/kWh e-Zn
6
Low Cost for Long Duration System System with two-day capacity: $50/kWh e-Zn
7
Advantages over Batteries Low cost for capacity expansion –$15/kWh versus > $400/kWh for lithium batteries Inherently long life – simple mechanical operation –batteries chemically degrade on charge/discharge No capacity fading with time –capacity fades with time for batteries Non-flammable - aqueous electrolyte –lithium batteries use organic electrolyte – safety managed with sophisticated BMS e-Zn

First Product 1-20kW/24 hour storage system (12 hours cycling capacity + 12 hours reserve capacity) Value to users - Efficient-economical use of solar energy - Power independence from grids - Back up for power outages - Reserve capacity for raining days For each 1kW-24 kWh e-ZnBatteries $2400($100/kWh)$9,600 ($400/kWh) e-Zn
9
System with 2 Days Capacity - 12 hours daily cycling + 36 hours reserve capacity 24 hours (24kWh) $600 $9,600 + e-Zn: $2400 Battery : $9,600 Per kW 1 day capacity 2 day system = $3,000 $19,200 + = e-Zn
