ENERGY USE AND COST
2
EFFICIENCY AND ELECTRICAL ENERGY When looking at how efficient electric energy is, 3 things must be considered: 1.Efficiency of producing electrical energy 2. Efficiency of transmitting electrical energy - about 9% of electricity produced at generating stations is lost as thermal energy (heat) 3. The efficiency of using electrical energy - some devices are more efficient than others ie) an electric motor typically has a percent efficiency of >80 %, where as an incandescent light bulb has a percent efficiency of about 5%!
3
SMART METER -is a meter that electronically tracks how much electricity a home or small business uses and when it is used. -With that information, electricity prices can vary at different times of the day, encouraging you to think more about how and when you use electricity. -This detailed information appears on your electricity bill to help you manage your electricity costs.
4
ELECTRICITY BILLS AND TIME OF USE BILLING
5
EXAMINING AN ELECTRICITY BILL Delivery – costs of delivering electricity from generating stations to your home Regulatory - costs of administering wholesale electricity and maintaining the reliability of the grid (includes funding programs for renewable energy and infrastructure Debt-retirement – pays down the debt of the former Ontario hydro

HOW TO FIND COST Cost = rate x energy used NOTE: the rate will change depending on the time of day! Sample problem: How much does it cost to run a dryer that uses 315kWh in a month when used between 5 and 7pm in the winter? (Hint: need the rate first)
7
SAMPLE PROBLEM ANSWER Given: Rate = 10.7 cents/kWh or $0.107/kWh Energy Used = 315kWh Equation and Solve Cost = rate x energy used = $0.107/kWh x 315kWh = $33.71

IMPROVING EFFICIENCY As electricity costs are getting higher every year, in Canada, it is now required by federal law that special “Energuide” information be attached to each appliance! If an appliance also has an “energy star” label attached, it shows that it is more energy efficient than the average.
11
APPLIANCES AND ENERGY USE Choosing an energy star appliance will help to decrease the amount/ cost of energy that the appliance uses.
