3 Roles of the President To set an example for the American people
Some presidents in other countries are known as king or queen. A person who shakes the president’s hand feels very honored. The president is a boss to a lot of government people. He decides how the laws of the United States are to be enforced and he also chooses officials and advisers to help make the right decisions. The president is also in charge of the navy, army, air force and the marines. The president decides where troops shall be stationed, where ships shall be sent, and how weapons shall be used.

4 Roles Con’t The President tells Congress to pass a law or veto a law.
He could say a speech to Congress He could also sign a bill for Congress The President makes sure that he is aware of the people that don’t have a job and high prices in the economy. He meets with certain people to discuss what is going wrong He makes sure everything is running smoothly.

5 Now let’s learn about the American Presidents
We will take a closer look at the first 5 presidents. At the end you will complete a worksheet and poem. You may pick which one you would like to do.

6 George Washington Was the first president of the United States.
George Washington also fought in the French and Indian War. 1759 served in the Virginia House of Burgesses When the Second Continental Congress assembled in Philadelphia in May 1775, Washington was elected Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. On July 3, 1775, at Cambridge, Massachusetts, he took command of his own troops. In 1787 became part of the ratification of the new constitution.

7 John Adams A delegate to the First and Second Continental Congresses, he led in the movement for our independence. He was elected as George Washington’s Vice President

8 Thomas Jefferson Third President of the United States of America.
Helped draft The Declaration of Independence Became minister of France in 1785. Thomas Jefferson was also a part of George Washington’s cabinet until he resigned in 1793 He first became vice president in 1796.

9 James Madison Fourth President of the United States of America
he participated in the Virginia Constitution in 1776, served in the Continental Congress, and was a leader in the Virginia Assembly. Known as the “Father of Constitution” He also helped frame the Bill of Rights

10 James Monroe Fifth President of the United States of America
Helped ratify the Constitution United States Senator in 1790

11 Acrostic Poem Take the word president and create an acrostic poem using each letter of president.

12 Word Search Complete a word search that includes the president’s names that we just learned.

13 Put the first five presidents in order
