PRE-MOBILIZATION TRAINING ASSISTANCE ELEMENT (PTAE) Task: Request 9-line MEDEVAC Condition: You have a casualty requiring medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) and you will need a patient pickup site. You will need operational communications equipment, MEDEVAC request format, a standard scale military map, a grid coordinate scale, and unit signal operation instructions (SOI). Standard: Transmit a MEDEVAC request, providing all necessary information within 25 seconds. Transmit, as a minimum, line numbers 1 through 5 during the initial contact with the evacuation unit. Transmit lines 6 through 9 while the aircraft or vehicle is en route, if not included during the initial contact. Terminal Learning Objective
11
PRE-MOBILIZATION TRAINING ASSISTANCE ELEMENT (PTAE) 9-Line MEDEVAC Line 1: Location of Pick up site Line 2: Call Sign Frequency Line 3: Patients by Precedence: A-Urgent, B-Urgent Surgical, C- Priority, D-Routine, E-Convenience Line 4: Special Equipment needed: A-None, B-Hoist, C-Extraction Equipment, D-Ventilator. Line 5: Patients by type: Ambulatory, Litter Line 6:Security of the pick up site: N-None, P-Possible Enemy, E- Enemy in Area, X-Engaged with the Enemy Armed escort required Line 7: Marking of the pick up site: Smoke, VS-17 panel etc. Line 8: Patient Nationality: A-US military, B-US civilian, C-Non-US military, D-Non US-Civilian, E-EPW Line 9: NBC contamination (wartime), Terrain Description (peacetime)

1. Collect all the information needed to send up a 9-Line MEDEVAC (go line by line to see what you need) a. Get your grid (at least 6 digit to get the helicopter to take off, refine it to an 8 digit to get it to land) b. Ensure you know YOUR call sign and YOUR frequency the pilots can reach you on c. Gather up the # of casualties and list them from worst off to not wounded. d. See what type of special equipment you need e. List what casualties are mobile/un-mobile (ambulatory, litter) f. Is there enemy in the area, are you being engaged? g. Do you have any civilian, EPW’s NON-US military wounded? h. Is there any NBC threat if so what is it? Peace time describe the terrain. Performance Steps
14
PRE-MOBILIZATION TRAINING ASSISTANCE ELEMENT (PTAE) 2. Record the information using the brevity codes. Lines 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 all use brevity codes. 3. Transmit the MEDEVAC request a. Make contact with MEDEVAC unit or a unit that sends up the request. Make contact with a receiver. b. Use effective call sign and frequency assignments from the SOI. c. Give the following in the clear “I HAVE A MEDEVAC REQUEST” d. Transmit the MEDEVAC Line by Line, Example: Line1: AB 12345678, Line 2: Sapper 37 33550, Line 3: 2A 1C (2 urgent 1priority) Line 4: A, Line 5: L+2 A+1 (2 Litter 1 Ambulatory) Line 6: X (being engaged by the enemy) Line 7: state the visual signals DO NOT STATE COLOR OF SMOKE if using smoke, Line 8: 3A (3 US military) Line 9: None or Peacetime mountains, trees, water etc. To end transmission say “over” NOTICE: you do not say “break” in between lines. Performance steps
15
PRE-MOBILIZATION TRAINING ASSISTANCE ELEMENT (PTAE) 3. Continued. e. Send transmission with in 25 seconds, The first 5 lines are the most important to transmit out in order to have a helicopter sent to you. You can send the other Lines 6-9 when the helicopter is airborne (if you have to do this, its preferable to send them all at once) f. wait and listen to radio for any additional instructions from the evacuating unit. Performance steps
16
PRE-MOBILIZATION TRAINING ASSISTANCE ELEMENT (PTAE) CHECK ON LEARNING What are the 5 most important lines to transmit first? What is a brevity code? When Calling in Line 7, if using smoke, you tell them the color?
17
PRE-MOBILIZATION TRAINING ASSISTANCE ELEMENT (PTAE) Performance Measures 1.Collected all information needed for the MEDEVAC request line items 1 through 9. 2. Recorded the information using the authorized brevity codes. 3. Transmitted the MEDEVAC request within 25 seconds
