Any given set of empirical observations may be explained (fitted) by an infinite number of possible models (hypotheses). Historical explanation (curve fitting) is relatively easy. How do we decide which is the best model/explanation? Two key criteria: - Simplicity - Predictive power. Equifinality Ludwig von Bertalanffy (1901--1972)
