Question: Explain meiosis and contrast it with mitosis. Homework:

Neurotransmitter: transmit signal across a synapse Hormone: transmit signals throughout entire body

Testosterone Estrogen Progesterone FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) LH (Luteinizing hormone) ALL listed above are in both male and female, but are more present in one or the other sex.

Primarily Testosterone Produced in testes General rule: leads to growth ex. Muscle development, development of sex organs also, more T = larger lungs, liver, etc.

Estrogen Made when LH and FSH secreted in ovary  production of female characteristics Progesterone Assists in pregnancy Reduces immune response, allowing implanting of embryo

Mammalian: adapted to internal fertilization and development – all occurs INSIDE of body Reproduction at its highest in middle of female menstrual cycle (14 days after menstruation = ovulation- when the egg is released) Many other animals exhibit internal fertilization and external development OR external fertilization, where animal releases eggs, THEN eggs are fertilized

Fertilization When sperm meets the egg Fertilization MUST occur in the fallopian tubes Once egg is fertilized, it sends out signals to STOP menstrual cycle, telling uterus to prepare its wall for implantation. ZYGOTE immediately begins to divide

Progesterone levels rise during pregnancy, preventing the body from fighting and killing embryo. Development** 2 gametes meet to create a zygote zygote = fertilized egg  develop into fetus

Cells divide through MITOSIS Cells DIFFERENTIATE cells are given specific jobs on what they will be come in the developing fetus Once assigned, they cannot change.

Zygote begins to develop embryo implants itself in the uterine wall network of mother’s and embryo’s blood vessels wrap around each other so oxygen and nutrients can diffuse from one blood stream to the other this is why babies do not have to take in oxygen themselves

**You are responsible for the parts/functions of BOTH reproductive systems! Mitosis Meiosis Homeostasis Hormone Testosterone Estrogen Internal development
