ENGLISH DEPARTMENT St Joseph’s High School, Crossmaglen At Key Stage Four, pupils will study either GCSE English Language or Essential Skills in Communication. GCSE English Literature is optional.

GCSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE Foundation and Higher tiers are available. Tier of entry is a decision at Unit level.

ASSESSMENT 60% of marks will come from Controlled Assessment. 40% of the marks will come from two exams – Unit 1 & Unit 2

WHAT IS CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT? Replaces coursework. Pupils must take ownership of their own work. Planning and prep work must be done as homework.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE Year 11 Unit 4: Studying Spoken and Written Language and Writing Creatively [40%] Controlled Assessment – 3 tasks, moderated Year11 Task 1: The Study of Spoken Language. (10%) Task 2: The Study of Written Language. (15%) Task 3: Writing Creatively. (15%)

ENGLISH LANGUAGE Year 12 Unit 1: Personal Writing & Reading Multi-Modal Texts (20%) External Exam Jan Unit 2: Functional Writing and Reading Non- Fiction(20%) External exam June Unit 3: Speaking and Listening (20%) Controlled Assessment Individual Presentation Group Discussion Role Play

ESSENTIAL SKILLS IN COMMUNICATION Years 11 & 12 To achieve both Level 1 and Level 2, pupils must: Produce a portfolio comprising 3 written documents and participate in Speaking and Listening tasks. This is worth 50% of the overall qualification. Complete a written exam and achieve at least 70% of the total marks.
