Our Island

Island Description  Fortunately we were lucky enough to be stranded on a plentiful and useful island. In the middle of the island is a large freshwater lake with a river connecting it to the ocean. The people’s shelter units are surrounding the lake. The river is used a transportation source for fisherman to get to the ocean and they store their lifeboats on the beach in the cove. Also in this cove area is where all the resources and goods are given to the government to split up. The rest of the island is covered in a variety of fruit trees, majority of them being banana trees.

Economic Plan  Make sure survival is possible  Meeting the basic needs for everyone  Distribute goods and services evenly  Main goals are economic equity and survival

Goods and Services  Fishing  Life boats on the abandoned ship used by fishermen for fishing  Spears are made from sticks and rocks  Bananas  Trees with bananas already on the island  People have the job of cutting down bananas and making them into other products as well as food.  Trees are also being replanted.

Land, Labor, and Capital  Land  Shelter-Each person on the island is given a space by the lake on the island to make shelter for themselves  Cultivation- Majority of the land will be used for the cultivation of bananas and other tropical fruits  Labor  Labor is split up among the people depending on their past experiences, skills, and strengths.  For example, women make better gatherers, and men are better with fishing.  Capital  Salvaged life boats from the ship would be used for fishing purposes.

Government and Authority  In this Island Economy the people will vote on three of the survivors to be in charge  These three in charge will be in charge of the even distribution of resources, goods, and shelter.  They will make sure the basic needs of everyone is met.  The Island is a command, socialist economy.  This is because there are people in charge of the distribution of everything, and also living is set up for everyone with out choice.  Its socialist because the government rations and controls the resources.

Opportunity Cost  On our island one of our goals is to make sure we produce enough food and goods for everyone to survive. If we pursue the cultivation and replanting of bananas over any other fruits, then our opportunity cost is the other fruits on the island.

Island Troubles?  Problem: The natural resources are becoming overused and studies indicate that your society is consuming more than can be stained in the long term.  Solution: The food which can be gathered from trees or is a plant, must be replanted so that that resource will not grow scarce. If a particular resource is running dangerously low then it must not be harvested anymore until the population restores. Also if there is overconsumption of food, then all the food gathered or hunted must be given to the leaders so they can fairly distribute and ration out the food.
