What is Mind-Body Medicine? According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), mind-body medicine "uses a variety of techniques designed to enhance the mind's capacity to affect bodily function and symptoms“ ( 2012). The focal point of mind-body medicine is on intervention strategies such as: relation techniques, visual imagery, tai chi, qi gong, hypnosis, and cognitive- behavioral therapy.

History of Mind-Body Medicine I The practice dates back to ancient times It is a huge part of the healing practices of Ayurvedic Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) - strongly believe in connection between mind- body

History of Mind-Body Medicine II 1960S and 1970s – physician Herbert Benson, studied how meditation can affect blood pressure - coined term “relaxation response” Present day – ancient traditions are being renewed - yoga, meditation - being taught more widely at medical schools throughout US and abroad

Mind-Body Techniques Biofeedback- focuses on training people to control certain bodily functions (ie heart rate and blood pressure) - person watches a monitor that provides feedback on bodily functions

Meditation Meditation - is an approach that anyone can incorporate into their lives to help them deal with stress, anxiety, and medical problems It elicits a heightened state of thought, contemplation, and reflection.

Types Of Meditation Part VI… Vipassana Meditation Buddha also discovered and taught another type of meditation thousands of years ago. It is called vipassana meditation. Vipassana Meditation - is taught as a way to cleanse impurities and toxins in body - heals mind/body - vipassana means “to see things clearly” - to benefit from utmost level of purification and reflection, strongly suggested to perform with professional assistance

Reflection… We feed, nourish, and stimulate our bodies with food and exercise. We recharge the mind/body with sleep and rest. These things and much more are imperative to not only staying alive but living fully. It is just as equally important to feed, nourish, stimulate, and recharge our mind-body-spirit connection. So start in the present moment with some medicinal medication for your mind-body-spirit connection.
