Data Analysis Making Sense of Data

Individuals: are the objects described by a set of data. Individuals may be people, but they may also by animals or things. Variable: is any characteristic of an individual. A variable can take different values for different individuals.

When you meet a new set of data, ask yourself the following key questions. Who are the individuals described by the data? How many individuals are there? What are the variable? In what units is each variable recorded? Why were the data gathered? Do we hope to answer some specific questions? When, where, how and by whom were the data produced? Where did the data come from? Can you trust the data?

Categorical and Quantitative Variables. Categorical variable places an individual into one of several groups or categories. Quantitative variable takes numerical values for which arithmetic operations such as adding and averaging make sense.

Distribution Distribution: of a variable tells us what values the variable takes and how often it takes these values.

So you wear seat belts? Each year the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration conducts an observational study on seat belt use.
