William Kamkwamba: How I harnessed the wind

I think William is a great role model for my students because he was their age when he built his first windmill. He proves that if you are properly motivated, great things can be accomplished!

From Malawi (Southeastern Africa) Built his first windmill when he was 14 Autobiography titled “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” He is currently 26 years old Attends Dartmouth College in New Hampshire Mentored by Bill Clinton Time Magazine’s “30 People Under 30 Changing the World”

“Before I discovered the wonders of science, I was just a simple farmer in a country of poor farmers.” I chose this quote because it shows that even if you come from a place with harsh conditions and few resources, science can be used to improve quality of life!

“In Malawi, the secondary school, you have to pay school fees. Because of the hunger, I was forced to drop out of school. I looked at my father and looked at those dry fields. It was the future I couldn't accept.” I chose this quote because he understands the value of education – even if he has to teach himself. Building the windmill provided power and the ability to pump water out of the ground for crops.

“I couldn't read English that well. I used diagrams and pictures to learn the words around them.” I chose this quote because it shows that even if you don’t fully understand what you are reading, you can still learn slowly and build off of what you do know. He didn’t give up even when things were difficult!

Provided electricity to his village Provided power to run pumps to extract groundwater which was used to grow crops Better quality of life for his friends and family Inspiration to young learners Popularizes the use of alternative energy for electricity His innovative thinking may be used on other projects in the future

What are your hopes for the people of Malawi, and how do you plan on continuing to better their quality of life? He did so much for them at a young age; I’m curious as to what he plans on doing now that he has more resources available to him.

What is your opinion on the energy policy of the United States? I am curious to get his opinion on this because the U.S has a tremendous amount of money and resources that could be dedicated to alternative energy.
