Water Project for Chasnigua, Honduras Graduate Students: John Jackson and Adrian Weaver Undergrads: Daniel Howell, John Stein, Eric Straily and Rebecca Walthall Faculty: Drs. David R. Munoz and Cathy Skokan dmunoz@mines.edudmunoz@mines.edu; cskokan@mines.educskokan@mines.edu

Collaborative Project People of Chasnigua CSM Geophysics Graduate Students CSM Engineering Undergraduate Students Civil Engineering Students from Universidad Autonoma de Honduras – Campus Valle Sula

Project Rationale – Reduce Vulnerability

March 2009 Trip - Purpose Spent eight days in Chasnigua with all of the students and Drs. Skokan and Munoz. Assessed the village needs. Mapped village with GPS. Extracted water samples for testing. Mapped the subsurface with electromagnetic instruments EM31, 34 and magnetometer to determine locations of interest for potential subsurface water.

March 2009 Measurements

EM34 – 40m Loop Spacing

Village Map from Google Earth & GPS Measurements Geophysics Project Existing System New Development

Bentley WaterCAD Modeling

Filters small particles Schmutzdecke provides effective purification to potable water standards Takes 10 to 20 days for Schmutzdecke to form and must be kept wet to maintain the biological layer Fairly easy to clean Sand Filter

Low maintenance filter for particles >100 Micron (.0039in) Made from durable, weather resistant and inexpensive materials Helps to make the sand filter last longer by filtering out the large particles Limited pooling effect means less contamination from animals drinking from the dammed water Particle Filter

Reinforced Polypropylene GeoMembrane Less Material Needed Labor Intensive Lower Cost

July 2009 Trip - Purpose Two graduate students and one undergraduate student travelled with Dr. Munoz Use DC resistivity to seek the location of fault zones and geological anomalies.

July 2009 Measurements

Approximate Locations of DC Resistivity Lines

DC Resistivity Results: NE/SW 500 m line, 20 m electrode spacing

DC Resistivity Results: NW/SE 500 m line, 10 m electrode spacing

DC Resistivity Results: NW/SE 500m line, 5 m electrode spacing

“More than an engineering project…” Thank you for your attention – Questions?
