Project Rationale – Reduce Vulnerability

March 2009 Trip - Purpose Spent eight days in Chasnigua with all of the students and Drs. Skokan and Munoz. Assessed the village needs. Mapped village with GPS. Extracted water samples for testing. Mapped the subsurface with electromagnetic instruments EM31, 34 and magnetometer to determine locations of interest for potential subsurface water.

Filters small particles Schmutzdecke provides effective purification to potable water standards Takes 10 to 20 days for Schmutzdecke to form and must be kept wet to maintain the biological layer Fairly easy to clean Sand Filter
10
Low maintenance filter for particles >100 Micron (.0039in) Made from durable, weather resistant and inexpensive materials Helps to make the sand filter last longer by filtering out the large particles Limited pooling effect means less contamination from animals drinking from the dammed water Particle Filter
11
Reinforced Polypropylene GeoMembrane Less Material Needed Labor Intensive Lower Cost
12
July 2009 Trip - Purpose Two graduate students and one undergraduate student travelled with Dr. Munoz Use DC resistivity to seek the location of fault zones and geological anomalies.
