Economy Almost entirely based on farming Grew cash crops - tobacco, rice, and indigo Large Plantations – relied on slave labor Religion Mostly Anglican (Baptist or Presbyterian) Catholic – Maryland, founded by Lord Baltimore

New England Colonies Colonies - Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut Geography Climate - cold winters, mild summers Coast - generally flat; Inland - more mountainous Soil is rocky, not ideal for farming

Economy Fishing (codfish) and Whaling Logging and trapping also important Shipbuilding - many also became wealthy due to slave trade Religion Mostly Puritans Very important part of daily life, strict rules and laws Did not sing or celebrate holidays

Middle Colonies Colonies - Delaware, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania Geography Climate - warm summers, cold winters East - coastal plains; West - mountains Good soil, ideal for agriculture

Economy Agriculture - grew grains and oats (“bread basket” region) Shipbuilding, textile (cloth) production, paper making Important trading ports (New York, Philadelphia) Religion Wide range of religions (Lutheran, Catholic, Jewish, Quakers) Tolerant of different groups
