3 Conflict Begins…  Mercantilism—A nation seeks to increase wealth & power Tobacco, lumber  America was an extension of England’s economy  But, the goal of the colonists was to become self-sufficient

4 Conflict Begins…  Navigation Acts (1651): No country could trade with the colonies unless through English ships All vessels must be run by crews that are ¾ English or Colonial Certain products only exported to England (Sugar, tobacco, molasses, etc) Almost all goods traded between colonies and Europe must first pass through English ports

5 Conflict Begins…  Enlightenment: Careful observation & rational thought Value of reason & scientific method EX: Ben Franklin’s kite in a thunderstorm  Led colonists to question authority of England

6 Conflict Begins…  Great Awakening Period of religious revivals aimed at restoring the intensity & dedication of the early Puritan church Led by Jonathan Edwards Time of reawakened interest in religion

7 French & Indian War  1754-1763  Conflict in North America between British and French  Ended with Treaty of Paris (1763) Ended French occupation in America  Proclamation Line of 1763—prohibited colonists from settling West of App. Mountains

8 Conflict Begins…  French & Indian War = Big Debt  Big Debt = Prime Minister raised taxes for colonists  Taxes were raised and smugglers were tried in British courts Sugar Act Stamp Act Townshend Act

9 Conflict Begins…  “No Taxation Without Representation!”  Boston Massacre—British soldier fires on a mob, kills 5 Americans  Partially repealed Townshend Acts  Boston Tea Party—refused to lift tax on tea & gave rights to British company So, Americans dumped it all into Boston Harbor  Intolerable Acts Quartering of Soldiers

12 Revolutionary War…  1775—Battle of Lexington & Concord Colonists win at Concord=boost in confidence  1776—2 nd Continental Congress Establish Continental Army led by George Washington  Battle at Bunker Hill—British Defeat Colonists, but 1,000 British soldiers die  Olive Branch Petition—return to the “former harmony”  King denied

13 Revolutionary War…  March 1776—British Army seized NYC  Dec 1776—Washington crossed Delaware River & took Trenton, NJ  Fall 1777—Colonial victory @ Saratoga, NY Bolstered French support  1778—Marquis de Lafayette joins Washington’s men Surrounds Cornwallis @ Yorktown & British surrender—October 19, 1781 Treaty of Paris, 1783  Confirmed U.S. independence
