Subject The subject of the poem is a homeless man who struggles to adapt to his life. He attempts to ignore his situation but in the end accepts that fact that help is needed.
4
Point of view The poem is spoken in first person. This means the character can address the reader directly creating a more personal feeling to the poem. We are made to sympathise with the character after the last line “I beg of you”. This acts as a turning point as before we feel resentment towards him/her even fear. Then we see his controlling nature was only to counter act his vulnerability.
5
Language “dear”- the character uses a word commonly associated with older people or couples. This is completely out of place in his situation but using it sounds patronising showing his feeling of superiority. “ I’ve chosen here” – the words chosen shows he has complete control of his situation in life and of the other person he’s “chosen”. “it’s not as if I am holding out” holding out gives us the impression that he feels that he doesn't understand how people that have in his view everything and can’t give him anything “just change” – change is a polysemy (pun) that can be inferred as literal change in terms of money’ we can also see ‘change’ as a desire for change in society and therefore the character’s life. “that’s big of you” – plosive, monosyllabic language creates a blunt aggressive tone that’s a harsh, sarcastic response to the person’s sympathy
6
Imagery 1.“ under the stars” – usually a romantic image which is completely out of place with the person’s situation. Shows his ongoing idealisation of his situation 2.“escape for locks and chains”- He would, for money, escape the lock and chains of poverty. The locks and chains stress how hard his situation is to escape. 3. “frankincense and myrrh” with the connotations of the Bible story of the three kings giving gifts to Jesus. Jesus represents the character’s need for generosity, kindness and salvation. 4.“I am on my knees” - he is kneeling before the public. This is an image of desperation and his admission that he needs help.
7
Form and Structure There is a loose rhyme scheme and half rhyme which may reflect the unpredictable personality of the character. The short sentences used at the end of the poem create a blunt tone which links to the character’s aggressive personality.
8
Tone The poem has two different tones Superiority and a desire for power is the main tone shown by the use of words such as “dear” “chosen”. Desperation shown by “beg” This reflects the turning point as the poem starts with the superior attitude and slowly turn to desperation.

Links Les Grands Seigneurs is similar as it shows a contrasting change between control and power down to a weak, powerless character Ozymandias was a person who was in a position of great power over others. Over time, however, this fades and their grip has been lost. The hunchback in the park has another outsider from society. In both poems the words “locks and chains” are used. Alison: Case History “Autocratic knee” “I am on my knees” show the difference in situation between the two characters using the same body part. In both also a change can be seen, in Give it is between the start and end and in Alison it is her, before and after her injury Brendon Gallacher is showing how someone wants something to improve their life in this case a friend. In Give the person is imaging their situation is a lot better to help improve their outlook on life.
