“Who’s There?”
3
Meaning: to obtain or get something; to gain by trade or purchase Example: When I save up enough money, I am going to acquire a new cell phone. I want to acquire the newest video game system for my birthday.
4
Meaning: limited; private; restricted Example: The drama club at this high school is exclusive, only kids with professional experience may join it. The golf club in my neighborhood is exclusive in its membership.
5
Meaning: a shape like a tube or a can Example: In art class I decorated a small cylinder to use as a pencil holder. Calculating the volume of a cylinder is not difficult if you know the correct formulas.
6
Meaning: a system of moving parts within a machine Example: The flash mechanism inside my camera broke and now I can’t take pictures at night. A pencil sharpener has a fairly simple mechanism inside it but it is very useful.
7
Meaning: stopping and starting, over and over again Example: The intermittent chatter from the crowd broke the musician’s concentration. The controller to my favorite game works intermittently which makes play difficult.
8
Meaning: impossible to endure or experience Example: The terrible heat made the long bus ride almost intolerable. The smell of burning popcorn is intolerable when I feel sick.
9
Meaning: something that has been saved from destruction or loss Example: When I go to the beach, I use a metal detector to find salvage like coins and jewelry. In the novel Ship Breaker, the main character works to find valuable salvage on wrecked or sunken ships.
10
Meaning: not moving or not able to be moved Example: I got a stationary bicycle so that I can train even when it rains. The play house is so heavy that now it is stationary instead of movable.
