Forming District Librarian Share Groups in Your Area Allison Floyd, Waldron Elementary Rachel Shankles, Lakeside High

Our Beginnings WeDewey began in Feb. 2009 when some newbies needed mentoring-type advice from some seasoned LMS’s; had 7 at first meeting River Valley Book Divas started in October, 2009 after hearing Rachel mention her group at AAIM. Started by sending message out on AAIM listserv to find interest. Consists of mostly small districts who wanted to network and collaborate. 12 at first meeting.

Purposes To share ideas for programming so that we don’t have to reinvent the wheel To be aware of library ‘stuff’ like Teen Read Week, Teen Tech Week, Music in the Schools Month, Children’s Library Week, AAIM and AASL opportunities To promote reading and literacy in the community by collaborating with public, college, and special local libraries Help with meeting frameworks

Best Practices Shared Examples Bookmarks for series listed on ourWeDewey wiki for all to print We book programs from each other’s schools One has a huge poster maker that makes us book club posters if we are doing the same title We advise each other on problems like challenges, policies, selection, programs that work or don’t work, what to purchase

Best Practices (cont’d) Share PowerPoints, websites, and lesson ideas on wiki Share book ideas such as, if you like Twilight try these…to print off for students Share favorite books and upcoming releases Share technology knowledge and ideas

Rewards of Collaboration Getting to know the other librarians in your area Having a network to contact when you need help Sharing ideas Fun, food, fellowship with your peers outside the classroom/library

Responsibility is Shared No hostesses Set next meeting place at each meeting Meet at restaurants that have WiFi Set up a wiki all are members of so each can post to the agenda and post documents that we request they share after seeing them at the meetings –instant relief for ‘I want that’ or ‘How did you do that?’ We all bring something to share each time even if just photos of what has been happening in our libraries that month or new renovations or displays
