Agenda What is currently known about HEC and HASE thickeners :
strengths and weaknesses Case studies addressing HEC and HASE known weaknesses thanks to new HASE technologies
3
HEC thickeners use and performance
Stable viscosities for shelf life stability Robustness vs binder technology Color compatibility, homogeneous appearance to tinted paints Open time to thin and thick paint coatings Powder form, preparation time more water amount and swelling time Poor leveling, addition of glycol or HEUR thickeners Spatter issues and limited brush drag/film build due to poor high shear building Limited choice of rheology profiles Case 3 Case 1
4
HASE thickeners use and performance
Case 2 A broad spectrum of rheology profiles, from Newtonian to pseudo plastic Better productivity, liquid form, no preparation, incorporation at any stage, post-addition Remarkable application properties thanks to the control of high shear rate viscosities Better price/performance ratio: less use of thickener leading to cost savings Dependant on binder technology Significant viscosity evolution overnight and in time for 0-VOC paints Open time reduction of thin and thick paint coatings Case 3

Dependency of HASE on binder technology
Case 2 Aim: to maintain rheological balance while choosing another latex chemistry and/or changing its amount in a Matt Paint Formulation Low Shear Viscosity mPa.s (Brookfield at 10 rpm) Medium Shear Viscosity 120 KU High Shear Viscosity 1.1 P (ICI viscosity) Three different latexes Two dosages Styrene Acrylic 1 5 % & 15 % of latex Styrene Acrylic % & 15 % of latex Ethylene Vinyl Acetate 15 % of latex Results Difference between the obtained and targeted values is calculated in %. Target is considered as achieved each time the difference is less than plus or minus 30%.
