LESSON NOTES Sound: a disturbance that travels through a medium as a compressional (longitudinal) wave. Cause of Sound: a vibrating object; vibrations push air particles together (compression) and spread air particles apart (expansion); travels as a series of expansions and compressions through the air as a sound wave.
4
Sound Waves = series of expansions & compressions of air molecules
5
LESSON NOTES Echo: sound wave reflected off of a surface. Example: in a cave. Speed of Sound: effected by elasticity, density and temperature of the medium
6
ELASTICITY Definition: ability of a material to bounce back to its original shape. Sound FAST – solids, why? elastic Sound SLOW – gas, why? Not elastic
7
TEMPERATURE Definition: A measure of the amount of heat in a material.
Sound FAST- hot Sound SLOW – cold At high altitude (cold), sound moves slowly; Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier (sonic boom). *** Complete Nature of Sound Booklet ***
