Majorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands with a population of 700,000

Due to: Good weather Cheap food and Drink Low Cost Flights Package Holidays More disposal Income Longer Holidays Has led to: Urbanisation Congestion Pollution Waste Shortage of Water House prices

A typical Coast line completely full of huge hotels Old Towns and Villages have been dominated by enormous modern buildings This has led for locals being driven out from urban development

Traffic pollution As people are hiring cars on holiday, there is more and more pollution being produced, and congestion on the roads is a big problem. Overcrowded As there are 11 million tourists a year: Shops Restaurants Beaches Roads and entertainment parks get over crowed leading to greater pressure on local residents making them frustrated.

As there are 15 tourists to every local resident, more and more waste is produced. Therefore at the moment: The environment is being destroyed More and more landfill sights are occurring from agricultural land. Disease and illness is more common. Each year an increase of 10% to 15% of waste is produced by tourists.

As more and more tourists enjoy Majorca, they decide to buy houses out their, which leads to: House Prices Increasing by 30% Local Residents not being able to afford property Increased anger and resentment amongst local people House sales have risen from 50,000 to 250,000 as seconds holiday homes on the island of Majorca. As people are earning more, the demand for second homes on the island is higher and therefore will increase the price.

Water As the demand for water is very high during the summer, Majorca has to bring in large amounts to cope with the carrying capacity. This leads to greater expense. Food Due to urban development farm land is being destroyed and therefore little production of food is being produced. Again Majorca ships large amounts in. Water Tanker Farm land destroyed by huge buildings

Before Tourism, Majorca was dominated by farming and had a poor economy. Tourism is 85% of Majorca’s Gross National Product (GNP) with farming being 2% Advantage Good for Majorca due to it bringing in lots of money. Disadvantage Bad for Majorca because they are over independent on tourism. Therefore, now they have sustained tourism they need to develop other ways of bringing in revenue if tourism collapses for any reason e.g. terrorist attacks.

Tourists and foreign people tend to stick together in their own social group and do not mix with local residents Due to there being a younger generation there are more fast food places which has meant that the traditional Spanish restaurants have been lost. Majorca agricultural culture International culture of the tourist

Due to all of the consequences that tourism is producing the calvia council has a plan called LA21 which has 3 aims: To improve future growth To improve existing urban areas To diverse the economy Also they are: Encouraging off peak holidays to attracted a different type of generation, not just the young. Introduce an eco-tax on tourists Overall Majorca has vast numbers of tourists each year but does come with a price to pay! e.g. to Farming as well as tourism
