1 Work What is work? Is the product of force and distance. When a force acts on an object in the direction the object moves. Some of the force has to cause the object to move if it causes work. Amount of work done on an object depends upon the direction of the force and the direction of the movement. Calculating work: force x direction Units for work: force (Newtons) and distance (meters) N*m = joules (J) (When a force of 1N moves an object 1meter in the direction of the force, 1joule of work is done. What is power?

2 Power The rate at which work is done. Power = work/time Units: 1J/s = watt (W) Horsepower (hp)= 746 watts

3 Simple vs. Complex Machines: 5.16 1. Distinguish between simple and complex machines and give an example of each. 2. Identify three interesting facts about the six simple machines and give an application of each. (screw and wedge, wheel and axle, pulley, inclined plane, and levers).
