1 Session 1: Learning to talk about talk Objective: To explore how and why we change the way we speak in different situations.

2 First, a bit of Latin... Literature = written works Literal = relating to the exact letter Literacy = the state of being educated Literary = concerned with books and writing Litany = a prayer consisting of words and responses Obliterate = to deface/ destroy letters Alliteration = the act of repeating a letter Liter/ Lit = ???

3 So what is 'oracy'? Orate Orator Oracle Oratory Oral Orally In groups, find the meaning of these words and come up with a definition for 'Oracy'.

4 Cross the line if... You are a quiet person.

5 Cross the line if... You are a talkative person.

6 Cross the line if... You ever change the way you speak.

7 Cross the line if... There is a person or group of people you are more comfortable talking to.

8 Cross the line if... You enjoy speaking in public.

9 Do we ever change how we talk? 1. On your own, list as many different situations for talk as you can. 2. In pairs, compare your list. Can you put them into different categories? 3. As a class, let's decide on categories and list on the board.

10 Dos and Don'ts In pairs, choose ONE situation and make a list of Dos and Don'ts. Volunteers will be chosen to act out one of our situations. The expert pair will guide the actors! Do...Don'ts...
