2. APPRENTICESHIP What is Apprenticeship? Apprenticeship is a post-secondary educational program the same as University or College. The difference is 80% of time spend in apprenticeship is on-the-job. The concept is “paid to work, paid to learn, the more you learn, the more you earn”. Who are we? 3. APPRENTICESHIP How do I become an Apprentice Prerequisites: - Provide proof of grade 12 or equivalent - Working Full time for an employer - Work under a certified Journeyperson - Pay the registration fee ($25.00)

4. APPRENTICESHIP Upon Registration Receive an Apprenticeship Progress Record Book Photo ID Card Be assigned an Apprenticeship Counselor Challenge our Essential Skills Assessment exam

5. APPRENTICESHIP Practical Training Work approx: 1500 – 1800 hours Be scheduled to attend block training Your counselor will monitor your practical and theory progress

APPRENTICESHIP Block Training Must pass the Essential Skills Assessment (ESA) exam to attend Block training Duration varies from 2 – 10 weeks »Most are 6 – 8 wks Tuition is $85.00 per week (6 wks =$510.00) Most employers lay apprentices off – Employment Insurance (EI) If EI eligible, you can apply for Training Skills Development grants (TSD)

8. APPRENTICESHIP Block Training Attendance policy Block exam (70%) $1000.00 Federal grant (Red Seal trades only) for passing each block 1 & block 2 Apply for the tuition rebate Return to work (Process continues for 3 to 5 years)

APPRENTICESHIP High School Credits 3 ways were established to receive credits towards an Apprenticeship 1) Hours credit for high school trades courses – 80 hrs per course with a mark 70% or higher - any course can be applied to any trade Ex: Automotive course – credit towards Carpentry Machinist course – credit toward Electrical Note: Hours credited from high school trade courses are available for six (6) years after graduation Effective date – July, 2010

21. APPRENTICESHIP 2) Credit of Hours for work experience - Applies to Coop/Career Exploration students on work terms - Summer employment - NB Teen Apprenticeship Program (NBTAP) Note: A student can receive credits for any or all 3 programs
