6 6 Culture of Jazz Jazz finds it’s roots in early African American music, the blues, and ragtime. The first jazz band to record was “The Original Dixieland Jazz Band,” in 1917. Their phonograph record created a sensation in the United States, as well as overseas. Louis Armstrong innovated jazz by bringing the soloist to the forefront of the music. In the 20’s – 40’s, Big Band jazz emerged as the most popular music of the era. WWII economy drives large ensembles out of work, and bebop jazz appears. These smaller groups revolutionize jazz. A variety of styles are born over the next 50 years, including Modal, Cool, Fusion, and others. Jazz is now a celebrated worldwide phenomenon. Most countries have a jazz scene to some degree.

But, because of its versatility, jazz is often blended with other styles of music: R&B, rock, latin, classical. You name it.
