4 NBPTS Mission  Maintaining high and rigorous standards for what teachers should know and be able to do,  Providing a national voluntary system certifying teachers who meet these standards, and  Advocating related education reforms to integrate National Board Certification in American education and to capitalize on the expertise of National Board Certified Teachers.®

5  According to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, the following objectives are the focus of standards for an accomplished teacher: To develop qualified teachers; To prepare students for the future; To define and measure goals for teachers and schools; To provide a foundation and common frame of reference; and To link teaching standards to actual teacher practice in the classroom. Why Standards for Accomplished Teaching?

6  Teachers:  Are committed to students and their learning.  Know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.  Are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.  Think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.  Are members of learning communities. Five Core Propositions

7 Certificate Areas  National Board Certification is offered in 24 different certificate areas across 7 developmental age groups, covering more than 95% of PreK-12 education. Art Career and Technical Education English as a New Language English Language Arts Exceptional Needs Specialist Generalists Early Childhood Middle Childhood Library Media Literacy: Reading- Language Arts Mathematics Music Science Social Studies- History Physical Education School Counseling World Languages Other than English French Spanish

8 The Process The certification process is comprised of two major components and can take the better part of a year to complete.

9 The Process  Candidates complete 10 entries.  The components consist of:  Four portfolio entries of classroom practice.  Six constructed response exercises administered at a computer-based testing center.  The components are assessed by trained teachers in their certificate area.

10  Describe, analyze and reflect on:  student work  professional practice  classroom interactions  Videotape their own classroom activities;  Present student work demonstrating growth over time;  Document accomplishments with students’ families and local/professional communities. Portfolio

11 Assessment Center: Measuring Content Knowledge  Schedule Half-day appointment;  Computer testing centers located across the state;  Respond to six computer-delivered prompts;  Allowed 30 minutes for each typed response;  Demonstrate breadth and depth of content knowledge;  Focus of questions associated with the certificate field.

12 How much does it cost? NBC Assessment Fees

13 NBC Assessment Fees  Nonrefundable Application Processing Charge: $65 Due: At the time of application submission.  Nonrefundable Initial Fee: $500 (applied to the assessment fee) Due: No later than December 31, 2007  Remaining Balance: $2,000 Due: No later than January 31, 2008  Total Fees: $2,565

16 Louisiana NBC Subsidy Program Eligibility  To be eligible for NBC, the applicant must have:  A Bachelor’s degree,  A valid teaching license, and  Completed three (3) years of teaching.

17 Louisiana NBC Subsidy Program Application Process  Complete an online application located at LDE website  Write an essay (no more than 1000 words) describing, analyzing, and reflecting upon your teaching practice in light of National Standards  Rubric Aligns with NBPTS scoring guide for portfolio entries/assessment center exercises Based on a 4-point scale  Selection of Candidates Essays are scored and ranked by NBCTs

18 Louisiana NBC Subsidy Program Application  A complete application will consist of: Online application Essay Incomplete submissions will not be considered for selection.

20 Louisiana NBC Subsidy Program Candidate Requirements  Employment Verification Form Must be signed in blue ink Submitted by October 1, 2007 Send NBPTS forms no later than November 15, 2007  Writing Seminar Focuses on three types of writing  Candidate Support Assigned mentor to promote professional growth through NBC process

21 Louisiana NBC Subsidy Program Deadlines  State Deadlines: Submit Online Subsidy Application by May 15, 2007. Submit Employment Verification form to LDE by October 1, 2007. Apply to NBPTS and submit $565 by October 15, 2007. Submit National Board Employment Verification & Eligibility forms to NBPTS by November 15, 2007. Failure to submit documents and fees by required date will result in forfeiture of state subsidy funds.

22 Louisiana NBC Subsidy Program Deadlines cont.  National Board Deadlines Submit Application & $565 nonrefundable fee: January 1, 2007 – December 31, 2007 All eligibility forms and full payment of $2,565: January 1, 2007 to January 31, 2008 Submit portfolio by March 31, 2008 Schedule Assessment Center Appointment by June 15, 2008

23 State Incentives  8(g) Grant  $2000 subsidy for first round and/or second applicants  NBCT Annual Supplement  $5000 salary supplement for eligible National Board Certified Teachers  Take One! ™  $395 for eligible second and third round applicants

24 What is Blackboard?  The Louisiana NBC Blackboard Established to provide support for teachers applying for National Board Certification in Louisiana. Allows teachers to network with candidates as well as LA NBCTs trained to provide candidate support. Easily accessible location for all subsidy application forms and candidate support documents.

25  Take One! ™ is A new offering from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards For educators interested in experiencing the highly praised professional attributes of National Board Certification.
