BE-BI camera projects HS, SB, EB March 2015
2
outline New digital cameras New rad-hard cameras (vidicon replacement)
3
New digital cameras(1/2) BE-BI has some 100 cameras installed, which need regular replacement. So far products have been bought from the consumer market. Problem: Short lifetime of products…every new procurement needs a new integration into the controls infrastructure Proposal: Design our own camera based on long term available camera chips, define interface to control system, have cameras designed and produced by collaboration partner/industry. Specifications in separate file
4
New digital cameras(2/2) So far done: Contact with KT group and FI department outcome: Follow procedure for industrial procurement, i.e. market survey, tendering, FC…. Proposal: Suggest development part to a partner institute, which shares the same worry…..do the development in collaboration up to a prototype (year 2016). Then launch MS etc. for industrial production of 100 pieces If by April 2015 no development partner institute is found, launch MS for development and production.

Vidicon replacement (1/2) Replacement of the rad-hard video systems needed: Vidicon tubes are no longer produced CERN has still a stock for some time, but action is needed now. So far no (European) industrial supplier found that offers a replacement tube (at a reasonable price). Recent contacts to a Russian provider; contact through Samara Space University. This Russian industry partner has similar products, but the size of the tube is different (30% smaller),the electrical interface is different and the scanning of the beam in the tube is based on a different principle….hence a new camera design is needed. There is an American provider with some rest stock of vidicon tubes
6
Vidicon replacement (2/2) Suggested action list: - Stephane buys “immediately” a significant stock of remaining tubes from the US provider…for 100 kCHF (the total available budget is 300k from consolidation) - we invite an expert from the Russian contact to CERN in order to explore the possibility of a complete outsourcing of new camera development plus long term delivery of tubes. - we still investigate possibilities for European suppliers: meeting with Mirion Technologies next week
