9/24/2001OKI Tool Developers © MIT 20001 Principles and Criteria Michael D. Barker The MIT Educational Media Creation Center September 2001

OKI Tool Developers © MIT 2001 9/24/20012 Principles n Design for the future n And more then Or (Solve the General first, then worry about exceptions) n Separate solutions (phases, layers, and alternatives)

OKI Tool Developers © MIT 2001 9/24/20013 How Do You Answer the Question? How can we provide web-based support for educational initiatives across the Institute? n Scalable (both large and small) n Sustainable (at least 5 years!) n Security, Privacy, Intellectual Property n Integrate with existing systems n Provide strong pedagogical support

OKI Tool Developers © MIT 2001 9/24/20014 Some Criteria (1)  Usable: designed to help the user accomplish what they want to do, quickly and easily, with a minimum of frustration  Scalable: supports both large and small uses  Sustainable: designed for service and maintenance, largely by non-technical staff  Stable: designed for minimum downtime  Secure: uses appropriate authentication, authorization, and security methods

OKI Tool Developers © MIT 2001 9/24/20015 Some Criteria (2)  Protects privacy: individuals are not identified more than necessary  Open: provides ways to interface with external systems  Accessible: provides support for alternative access  Supportable: has administrative, support, operations, and future development "built in"  Supports future improvements: has been designed for change, both in addition of content, small corrections and large enhancements

OKI Tool Developers © MIT 2001 9/24/20016 Worksheet  Usable  Scalable  Sustainable  Stable  Secure  Privacy  Open interfaces  Accessibility  Supportable  Designed for Change API:__________________________ Notes: _________________________________________ _______________________________________________

OKI Tool Developers © MIT 2001 9/24/20018 Additional Materials

OKI Tool Developers © MIT 2001 9/24/20019 Scalable n Scalable: must be able to handle expected loads n Scalable: must be designed and tested for handling large growth (e.g. 1,000 courses per year, 10,000 students) n Scalable: must not impose unnecessary overhead when used with small classes

OKI Tool Developers © MIT 2001 9/24/200110 Sustainable n Designed for service and maintenance largely by course administrators n Revision control n Separation of operational systems from development and test systems n Usability testing n Documentation and Team Reviews

OKI Tool Developers © MIT 2001 9/24/200111 Security n Authentication: identify individual users n Authorization: control over access to resources, functions, and privileges n Copyright and Intellectual Property issues

OKI Tool Developers © MIT 2001 9/24/200112 Privacy n Provide method to inform students of how personal information will be used. n Provide method to see what privileges user roles have for a class n Provide methods for identification (e.g. alias or nickname) n Provide ways to encrypt information where desirable

OKI Tool Developers © MIT 2001 9/24/200113 Stability n Continuous operation (24x7) n Minimal downtime

OKI Tool Developers © MIT 2001 9/24/200114 Usability designed to help the user accomplish what he or she wants to accomplish, quickly and easily, with a minimum of frustration. n Single logon n Limited use of technical terminology

OKI Tool Developers © MIT 2001 9/24/200115 Accessibility n designed for use with screen readers and plain text browsers n Text transcripts, alt text tagging n Large font options n Closed captioning

OKI Tool Developers © MIT 2001 9/24/200116 Open Interfaces Provide ways to easily create and manage interfaces to external systems such as: n SIS/Registrar n Library reserves n Online electronic thesis repository ("ethesis"?) n Online classes managed by other departments n Legal systems (e.g. for managing copyrights) n Older online classes which will be imported into this system n External logging systems n Other do-it-yourself or off-the-shelf software n Classes at other institutions

OKI Tool Developers © MIT 2001 9/24/200117 Other Requirements n Logging n Flexibility n Customizable "look and feel" n Sharable content n Ability to provide "headline"-style information, and summaries, for use by portals.
