3 Objectives: We Will Be Able To…  Understand the basic outline of this course in physics, including topics covered and methods of instruction.  Understand the expectations of the course, including academic and behavioral habits.  Know and follow the format for a typical class.  Know Mr. Richter’s name, email, and how to get to the class website

4 Beginning Procedures and Warm-Up  Each day, start class by completing the following tasks:  Copy the objectives into your notes.  Copy the homework assignment into your agenda  Begin the warm-up  Warm-Up: Most days, there will be an opening activity on the screen/board for you to complete at the start of class.  During this time I am usually taking attendance and checking homework.

5 Warm-Up: How much time passed?  A man looks at a clock in his office that displays hours and minutes. He reads the clock as 10:54. He leaves the room, and when he returns, he reads the clock at 11:02. Based on this data, what is the shortest amount of time he could have been out of the room? What is the longest?  At your table, discuss possible answers and reasoning, and record your results. Justify your reasoning! Then, select one person to orally present your findings to the class.

8 Classroom Procedures/Guidelines  All-encompassing Motto:  This is my job. We are here to work. We are professional.  Specifics  Punctuality. Be here on time. Work for 56 minutes.  Be prepared for class when the bell rings.  Tolerance and respect of beliefs and ideas.  Passes (to restroom, nurse, etc.).  No food.  Take pride in what you do.

9 What is Physics?  On a sheet of paper (or in your notes, if you have a notebook already), answer the following questions in complete sentences:  What is science?  What do you think physics is?  What is a physicist? Do you think Mr. Richter is a physicist? Do you think you are a physicist?

14 Newsflash!  Newsflash is a TeacherWeb feature that allows me to send short (tweet-length) messages to you about class as a group.  i.e. “Don’t forget, there’s a quiz tomorrow” or “We’re having class in the library. Bring your goldfish!”  It’s for you and your parents, to keep everyone informed.  Text or email or both. Something you check frequently.  You must sign up for Newsflash. A quiz answer will be sent to the Newsflash list on Sunday.

15 Homework  Sign up for Newsflash by going to TeacherWeb by Friday.  Read and sign the colored copy of the syllabus by Monday.  Have your parents read and sign the colored copy of the syllabus by Monday.  Think about what you think physics is. Always.
