Reader’s Notebook GOAL: I WILL USE MY READER’S NOTEBOOK TO HELP FACILITATE MY COMPREHENSION OF MY NOVEL BY COMPLETING ACTIVITIES USING READING SKILLS AND STRATEGIES.

Reader’s Notebook Activity Selection for Monday, January 26, 2015 Read during the Reader’s Workshop. Then, select ONE of the following options: 1. Draw 4 objects that represent your reading. Write a sentence for each, telling what each item says about what you’ve been reading. 2. In a few sentences, summarize what you have read today. 3. Make a timeline of events that have occurred in your book so far. 4. Describe the setting’s time and place. List the clues that helped you identify the setting. Draw it.

Create a criminal record with a photo (like an arrest report) for the antagonist. 2. List three new vocabulary words from your reading. Reader’s Notebook January 30, 2015 Read during the Reader’s Workshop. Then, select ONE of the following options: 1.Describe the similarities between the main character and you. 2.Describe your least favorite character and explain why. Describe your most favorite character and why. 3.Draw a comic strip or graphic novel page for what you just read. 4.Draw a line in the center of your paper (about 5 rows on your notebook paper). On the left, write 5 facts from what you read. On the right, write your personal opinions about what you read. 5.Pretend you are a talk show host and two characters are the guests on your show. Which characters would you chose and why? List two questions that you, the host, would ask each character. 6.Pretend you are a friend of one of the characters. Write him or her a letter.

Then, select ONE of the following options: 1.Draw a line in the center of your paper (about 5 rows on your notebook paper). On the left, write 5 facts from what you read. On the right, write your personal opinions about what you read. 2.Draw a comic strip or graphic novel page for what you just read. 3.Explore how the main character changed throughout the story. 4.After stopping your reading for today, describe an event you predict will happen next. Draw your prediction. 5. Write about something that surprised you or that you found interesting.

Reader’s Notebook Activity Selection for Tuesday, February 3, 2015 Read during the Reader’s Workshop. Then, select TWO of the following options: 1. Describe what was either believable or unbelievable about your reading. 2.Think of a problem that a character had to face. Write the problem and how the character solved it or is working to solve it. If you were that character, what would you do differently? 3.What is your favorite part of the book you’re reading? Why? 4.What has happened so far? What do you think will happen next? 5.What character is like you? Describe how he or she is like you. 6.What are two emotions the main character has felt? What made the main character feel that way? 7.What have you found boring about what you’ve been reading? What made it boring? If you were the author, what would you do to make it more interesting? 8.What is something that you have learned from your reading? Responses should be at a minimum of three sentences. You must include drawings or pictures to help convey your ideas.

Then, select ONE of the following options: 1.What you are reading is going to be made into a movie. Create the movie poster. 2.If a sequel was created for this book, it would be titled…and would be about… 3.This book reminds me of the fairytale ___________ because… 4.Discuss how the character shows their personality because of the actions they make. 5.Discuss a portion of the book that was too predictable. Explain why it was predictable and why you liked or disliked this situation.

Then, select ONE of the following options: 1.Create a slogan for the book and explain why you chose this… 2. Choose a character of the book, and decide what would be two appropriate birthday presents for that character and explain why. 3.If this book would become a movie, choose 5 main scenes and why you chose them. 4. How would the story be different if it was told: A. From a different narrator B. In a different time period

Explain the award and why this book received it. 2. Create a theme song with lyrics for the book. 3. Turn a scene of narrative into a play script.

Reader’s Notebook Activity Selection for Monday, February 9, 2015 Then, select ONE of the following options: 1. Which character would you like to be in the book? Why? 2. What are the best parts of the book? Why? What are the worst parts? Why? 3. Do you think the title fits the book? Why or why not? 4. Do any of the characters remind you of friends, family members, or classmates? Explain. 5. Did this book make you laugh? Cry? Cringe? Smile? Cheer? Explain your answer.

In 4-6 sentences, describe several insights you’ve gained from today’s reading. 2. List five major events in order from which happened first to last. 3. Pretend you have special powers and could put yourself in your reading. Where would you put yourself and why? How would you being there change the story? 4. Use pictures/graphic organizer to represent your reading (so far) in the story. 5.What event could have happened in real life? What would be similar in real life? What would be different in real life?

Was this a life changing effect? 2. Use pictures/graphic organizers/concept web to represent your reading in the story for today. 3. What is the title of the story of what you are reading? How does it fit the story? If you don’t know yet how it fits the story, what is your best guess? 4. Write a review of what you have just read (summary plus personal opinions). 5.Why did you choose to read this book? Give at least 3 reasons. 6.Write a biography for one character.

Analyze what motivates the main character’s behavior. 2. Compare what is happening to a character in the book with your own or a friend’s life. 3. Discuss what you think about the general statement about life, or life-lesson, can be found in what you are reading. 4. Evaluate whether the main character would be worthy of your friendship. Provide examples citing evidence from the book. 5.Explain why somebody should or should not read this book. 6.Outline the plot.

List three characters and their personality traits. 2. In a few sentences, summarize what you have read today. 3. Usually an author uses descriptive words to allow us to set the mood and setting. How does the author do that? What words are used? 4. Analyze how your feelings change as you read this novel and why. 5.Compare where you live to the setting described in what you are reading.
