2. What is tone in a story?  It is like a voice that is speaking to you.  A literary technique to show the overall attitude towards the subject of the story.  It affects the meaning of the story, and how you interpret it.

3. How does tone affect the author’s purpose?  The tone of the story helps the author to portray what he/she is thinking while telling the story and what they are trying to tell you throughout.

4. How does tone affect the mood of the story?  The tone of the story helps to portray what the reader feels and thinks while reading the story.

5. “I really need you to come inside now.”  If the voice calling you is happy, what might the mood inside the house be?  What events or details in the house would make for a happy mood?  What events could cause an angry mood?  What events could cause a calm or serious mood?

6. Tone in Literature  What do you think the tone and mood was like in Holes?  What do you think the tone would be in a book like Hunger Games?

7. “Hello, Kira,” smiled Max. He walked over to give Kira a hug. “I have been waiting all week to see you. Tell me what is happening in your life.” Kira looked away, out the window.
