OBJETIVES AND METHODOLOGY OBJECTIVES: To learn about Spanish scientists whose research works have helped the world: To understand the working of the human body. To know the formation mechanism of proteins. To improve people´s health. METHODOLOGY: In groups we will work on different scientists. In class we will unify the teams´ work. In the end, we will include a power Point presentation, with the most important information about them.

SANTIAGO RAMÓN Y CAJAL He was born in Petilla de Aragón (Navarra) on 1st May 1852 He died in Madrid on 17th October 1934

WHAT DID HE DISCOVER ? He discovered the SINAPSIS, that is, how neurones are joined, and the unidirectional nervous impulse transmmision. He had many awards, for example: –-1894: Honoris causa by the University of Cambridge. –-1900: National Prize of Moscow –1906: Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine.

MIGUEL SERVETO Y CONESA He was born in Villanueva de Sigena (Huesca) on 20th September 1511 He died in Ginebra on 27th of October 1553

WHAT DID HE DISCOVER ? He discovered pulmonary circulation or minor circulation, in XVI century. He was pursued by the Inquisition, and He was burnt by heresy.

SEVERO OCHOA ALBORNOZ He was born in Luarca (Asturias) on 24th September 1905 He died in Madrid on 1st November 1934

WHAT DID HE RESEARCH ? He discovered the mechanisms of acid ribonucleico (RNA) synthesis. He contributed to decode the genetic code, which is responsible for the proteins synthesis. He was Nobel Prize of Physiology and Medecine in 1959.

PEDRO ALONSO Y CLARA MENÉNDEZ He was born in Madrid 1957 Clara is his wife and colleague.

WHY IS HE A VERY IMPORTANT PERSON ? They are married. They discovered a vaccine against malaria. They tested it with African children. This vaccine will be ready to be used in 2012. He received the Prince of Asturias Prize for international colaboration, in 2008.

JOSÉ CELESTINO MUTIS BOSIO He was born in Cádiz on 6th April 1732 He died in Bogotá (Colombia) on 11th of September 1808

WHAT DID HE DO? Doctor in Marina´s hospital of Cádiz. In 1873 he prepared a botanical expedition around America, emphasizing his work on the flora of Colombia. He was in contact with Carlos Linneo, father of taxonomie.

DANIEL JIMÉNEZ DE CISNEROS He was born in Caravaca de la Cruz (Murcia) 16th April 1863 He died in Alicante on 17th January 1941

WHAT DID HE DO ? He was a very important paleontologist. Your more important work was to describe the outcrops of the Lias (Liasico: belonnging to the Jurassic one) near Caravaca. He was nominated a scientific correspondant of the Museun of Natural Sciences of Madrid.

JUAN DE LA CIERVA Y CODORNIU He was born in Murcia on 21st of September 1895 He died in Croydon (England ) on 9th of December 1936

WHAT DID HE INVENT ? Engineer. He invented the autocraft, predecessor of the helicopter. He died on a plane crash. Many neigborhoods, tube lines and train stations are named after him,

ISAAC PERAL Y CABALLERO He was born in Cartagena (Murcia) on 1st June1851 He died in Berlín on 22th of May 1895

WHAT DID HE INVENT ? Engineer. He invented an electrical submarine, which you can see in the maritime walk of Cartagena. Neighborhoods, high school, places and parks, are named after him.
