Jumanji By: Chris Van Allsburg Debra Wingate Multiple-Text Assignment FRMS 7331 Dr. Draper July 2, 2008

Summary: Left on their own for an afternoon, two bored and restless children find more excitement than they bargained for in a mysterious and mystical jungle adventure board game.

Table of Contents The students will watch a video clip from the movie on you tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrLzGwctOgg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrLzGwctOgg The students will write a “What if” ending on one of the following topics: What if they were left with the problems created: two feet of water in the house, lions, pythons and monkeys, and the volcano? Devise solutions to each problem other than finishing the game. What if six kids had played the game? What's on the other squares that would come to life? The students will use a picture from the book to better understand art elements and techniques in picture books. The students will draw their own pictures of the book. The students will also read Zathura to compare and contrast with the book Jumanji. The students will also create a story quilt. Web quest: http://www.webquest.org/questgarden/lessons. The students will use the web quest to learn about the four layers of the rainforest after reading Jumanji. http://www.webquest.org/questgarden/lessons

“In writing and illustrating Jumanji, the inspiration was my recollection of vague disappointment in playing board games as a child. Even when I owned Park Place with three hotels, I never felt truly rich, and not being able to interrogate Colonel Mustard personally was always a letdown. Another motivating element for Jumanji was a fascination I have with seeing things where they don't belong. The pictures in newspapers of cars that have run amok and crashed into people's living rooms always get my attention. There's the room, almost normal: sofa, TV, amused homeowner, end tables, and the front half of a Oldsmobile. It occurred to me that if an Oldsmobile in the living room looked that good, a herd of rhinoceros could have real possibilities.” By: Chris Van Allsburg

The students will watch a video clip from the movie that was made in 1995 featuring Robin Williams and Kirsten Dunst. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrLzGwctOgg After watching the video the students will compare and contrast it with the book. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrLzGwctOgg

The students will write a “What if” ending on one of the following topics: 1. What if the children left with the problems they created— two feet of water in the house, lions, pythons, monkeys, and a volcano? 2.What if six kids had played the game? 3.What other squares would have come to life?

The students will use the picture to see how the author used charcoal pencil to illustrate this book to create realism and to manipulate light and shadow to create an unsettling mood, and the odd angles which present disconcerting views of common scenes. The students will also use the picture to help them understand art elements and techniques in picture books. The students will create their own pictures from the book.

The students will also read Zathura and create a venn diagram to compare and contrast it with Jumanji. The students will also create a story quilt with the title of the book, author’s name, favorite lines, and a sketch.

The students will use the poem about the rainforest to help them create their own poems to find relationships with science and literature.
