II. Adolf Hitler J.1920: National Socialist German Worker’s Party (NSDAP) later known as the N.A.Z.I.’s K.Leads the “Beer Hall Putsch” in 1923 i. Nazi’s march on Munich (in S. Germany). After taking control of the government there, Hitler planned to march on Berlin L.Arrested and imprisoned for 5 years i. He only served 1 year M.Writes Mein Kampf in prison i.“My Struggle” ii.(anti-Semitic, anti-communist, etc)

This gives him FULL and LEGAL dictatorial powers over Germany

Germany Under Hitler A.Passes Nuremberg Laws of 1935 i.Revokes rights of the Jews ii.Racial purity laws iii.Prevents marriages between Jews and non-Jews iv.Jews cannot employ non-Jewish women under the age of 45 v.Jews cannot display the German Flag B.Rebuilds army in 1936 i.Treaty of Versailles forbids it ii.Rebuilds the army, navy and airforce (Luftwaffe)

Germany Under Hitler C.March 1938- Anschluss with Austria i.Voluntary union of Austria with Germany ii.Hitler’s first movement to gain an empire iii.Example of appeasement D.Sept. 1938- Germany takes the Sudetenland i.At the Munich Conference France, England and Italy agree to appease Hitler by giving him the Sudetenland (in Czechoslovakia) ii.Czechoslovakia was not invited to this meeting iii.Hitler promised this was the last time he wanted to add land to his empire iv.Example of appeasement

Germany Under Hitler E.Kristallnacht occurs Nov. 9 th and 10 th, 1938 i.Night of Broken Glass ii.Jewish businesses, homes and synagogues were attacked iii.91 Jews were killed iv.30,000 Jewish citizens were arrested and taken to Concentration Camps v.1,668 synagogues were ransacked and 267 were burned down F.Nazi-Soviet Pact signed in Aug. 1939 i.Hitler and Stalin promise to not attack each other ii.They also divide up Poland G.German invasion of Poland Sept. 1, 1939 i.This officially starts World War II!
