BASIC INFO Population today is about 56,060 people. Mainly located in Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. The tribe speaks 7 different languages. Their religion is Christianity or a traditional tribal religion. Nomadic Set up homes called “Wickips” wherever they traveled. CULTURE Lived with their extended family. Extended families then joined together to make a “local group”. Local groups held ceremonies together for may different purposes. One of the ceremonies that is still commonly held today, is similar to a Sweet Sixteen or a Bat Mitzvah. It signifies a girl becoming a young woman.

BASIC INFO Largest North American tribe. Population today is about 300,050 people. Mainly located in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. Speaks Navajo or English. Religion is Christianity or a traditional tribal religion. Lived in homes called “hogans”. CULTURE Preformed many ceremonies. Almost every act of there life, from building their house to planting crops, had a ceremony that was preformed for it.

There was a lot of conflict between the United States of America and the Native Americans. Conflict started with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, because more and more Americans were moving into the Indian’s land that they have owned for thousands of years. Other conflicts occurred because the Americans didn’t understand the Indians’ culture. Because of this Americans thought that the Indians were savages. So, they believed it was okay to take there land.

The Transportation Revolution made it much easier to get to the Western side of the country because routes were made through the rocky Mountains. The Native American Tribes thought that the Americans were destroying their land with these routes and tunnels.

As a result of the expansion of America, many Native American tribes migrated south into modern day Mexico.
