TODAY’S LESSON: WHO IS THIS GUY?

Opening Question If someone in an elevator said to you, “You seem sorta Christian-ish -- who exactly is this Jesus guy?” what would you say?

Matthew 16:13-14 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

Deep Dive 1.Jesus asked the disciples lots of questions. Why do you think he asked them this one? 2.For 1,829 bonus points, who said this: Jesus was either “a liar, a lunatic or Lord”? What do you think he meant?

Matthew 16:15-17 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Jesus replied,” Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.

Matthew 16:18-20 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.

Deep Dive 1.What about Peter’s response strikes you? Where (or more precisely, whom) did it come from? 2.Unpack each statement Jesus made in response. What do they mean?

Matthew 16:21-25 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

Matthew 16:21-25 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”

Matthew 16:21-25 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.”

Deep Dive 1.Contrast Peter’s statement here and Jesus’ response with what happened just moments before. What’s going on in Peter’s head (and heart)? 2.What challenge did Jesus issue to the disciples? 3.So, who do you say Jesus is? Do you really have faith in him? Will you really follow him?
