AIM: Human Societies Do Now: What are resources? Give examples of resources.

Resources Something that lies ready for use, something that can be used for support or help Ex. Oil, coal, minerals, trees, books, people

Sustainable To keep in existence, maintain

Different ways of solving problems 1.hunter-gatherer society 2.Agricultural society 3.Industrial society Three general ways of dealing with the problems of survival

Hunter-Gatherer Lives within the ability of the land Gather natural food (no planted food) hunt Nomadic (move around) Make little or no effort to control the natural resources Small impact on the environment- low population density enables the environment to regenerate

Hunter-gatherer Healthy- well fed, low disease rate Short life span Uses small amount of energy- fuel from wood

Agricultural Crops are grown, people have specialized roles Farming –Many settled permanently –Work was divided among members of society

Inventions 1.Plow- plant more land, grow more food 2.Domestication of animals These caused an increase in food supply, which caused the human population to start to grow

Rise of Cities As human populaton started to grow, cities began to form (not all farmed) Advances in technology and simple machines Diseases were common in cities Increase in energy use

Environmental Concerns Logging Overgrazing Poor farming practices These led to loss of soil and vegetation Caused a change in rainfall desertification

How does loss of vegetation lead to a change in rainfall? Transpiration form trees plays a major role in cloud formation- cutting down trees would decrease the amount of precipitation overall, leading to a drier climate

Industrial Production of food and other products is performed by machines- advanced technology –Tractors –Irrigation pumps Factories started to rise- uses large amounts of energy and resources Overuse of soil, forest, mineral resources- not sustainable

Human population Permanently settled Industrial societies cause the human population to increase quickly An increase in production, energy use, and human population led to environmental change- pollution of air, land and water

1.What type of society impacts the environment least? Explain. 2.Describe two ways in which farming has changed the way that people live. 3.How have agricultural societies harmed the environment? 4.What is an industrial society? 5.How has the development of industrial societies led to an increase in human populations? 6.List several problems that have been caused by industrial societies.
