Matter: Properties and Changes
Periodic Family Album Matter: Properties and Changes
2
Students will create a “family album” for each periodic table family.
There will be a two page spread per family Must include: Alkali Earth Metals Transition metals Boron Family Carbon Family Nitrogen Family Oxygen Family Halogen Family Noble Gas Family Lanthanide Series Family Actinide Series Family Metalloid Cousins
3
Literature Connection
Personify each element. Use the chemical and physical characteristics to illustrate each element
4
What does a Family Album Look Like
5
Student Creations! Element Characters need to be personified. Element Characters should be created interacting with members of the family or other elements they will react with. Students can create computer generated characters or use like characters but all writings must be authentic. OVERALL PREFERRED ARE HAND DRAWN CHARACTERS.

Each family of the periodic table will receive a two page layout
Each family of the periodic table will receive a two page layout. Each family will have all the elements of that family pictured. Pictures would/should include elements that have joined together. Those that join must be able to join together. Pictures of elements properties (chemical and physical) should be included Information from the research paper should be placed as caption under each pictures. Should be fully colored and created by hand. (creations are by hand, captions are by hand)
7
Research Paper ~ Choose a family of the periodic table. Research the following information: ~ Family name ~ Names of all the elements located within that family ~ Name the symbol and origin of the symbol, the atomic number, the atomic mass, and valence electron number. ~ Diagrams of each of the elements atomic structure (nucleus with protons and neutrons, and electron configuration).
8
Research Paper Continued
~ Are each of the elements found naturally or are they man made? ~ Are each of the elements found in solid, liquid or gas form at room temperature? ~ Describe the physical properties of the family (melting points, boiling points, density, and color) ~ Describe the chemical properties of the family. (Reactive, highly reactive, non-reactive) Family’s reaction with oxygen and their reaction with acids. ~ With what elements will the family react? ~ What substances will be created with the reaction of these elements? ~ Miscellaneous information discovered about the families through your research
9
Research Paper : Rules ~ All writing must be authentic. ~ If a quote is used, an in text citation must be used. (help from Language A, Media Coordinator, or myself will assist) ~ Diagrams are to be the Bohr Model of an atom learned in class. ~ papers are to be a minimum of three pages typed, times new roman 12 point font or Four pages hand written collaged ruled lined. ~ Maximum of 5 pages typed or 6 pages hand written. ~ Must include a bibliography page citing all sources.
