Organisation Goals

Organisations are groups of people working together towards a common goal. As the nature of the organisation changes, so does its organisational goals.

Organisations, such as sporting clubs have goals relating to increasing memberships, whereas non-profit organisations could have a goal of providing a service to the community.

Businesses are organisations that generally have profit as a goal. Some common goals of both commercial (profit-based) and non- profit based organisation could be:

To provide a high standard of customer service

To produce excellent quality goods, etc.

A main reason why individuals and organisations create information systems is directly related to the achievement of their goals

To increase market share

To improve service

To achieve efficient work practices

To reduce wastage of resources

To provide the most extensive range of products within the industry.

Operational Goals:

Operational goals are likely to be concerned with the efficiency and effectiveness of the operations of the organisation, or the work of the individual employees.

Efficiency – to save time, cost and effort Effectiveness – for a system to work as it should without any problems occurring

Examples of Efficiency based goals:

To reduce the cost of processes involved in the production of services and goods

To reduce the amount of effort taken by staff

To reduce the time taken to complete essential activities

To cause the products and services produced to become more comprehensive

Strategic Planning:

–The process of developing a set of goals is called strategic planning which consists of organisations developing long term goals and strategies for achieving these. –Organisations support their strategic planning by providing adequate resources that consist of Information systems and personnel to run them.
