Chief Joseph Chief of the Nez Perce Refused to be moved to a reservation in Idaho Fled to Canada, losing women and children to starvation and exhaustion along the way

“Hear me, my chiefs, I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever” -Chief Joseph

The Indian Problem By the mid-1800s Indian policy changed from pushing west to seizing land and forcing Native Americans onto reservations Goal was to break power of the Plains Indians and open up lands for settlement-Tribes included the Sioux, Blackfoot, Cheyenne, Kiowa, and Comanche

Dawes Act of 1887 Broke up reservations and gave each Indian an allotment of land which reduced their lands from 138 million acres to 48 million Indian Schools: Taught kids English and the “white” way

“ All instruction must be in the English language. Pupils must be compelled to converse with each other in English, and should be properly rebuked or punished for persistent violation of the rule. Every effort should be made to encourage them to abandon their tribal language.”

“So far as practicable, a uniform style of clothing for the school should be adopted. Two plain, substantial suits, with extra pair of trousers for each boy, and three neat, well-made dresses for each girl, if kept mended, ought to suffice for week-day wear for one year.”

“A regular and efficient system of industrial training must be a part of the work of each school. At least half of the time of each boy and girl should be devoted thereto—the work to be of such character that they may be able to apply the knowledge and experience gained, in the locality where they may be expected to reside after leaving school.”

Indian Wars (1861-1890) Sand Creek Massacre (1864) 150 Cheyenne Indians were killed by U.S. Army wiping out an entire village

Battle of Little Bighorn (1876) 4,000 Sioux warriors massacred 200 U.S. soldiers led by General George Armstrong Custer

Wounded Knee Massacre (1890) In December, Army troops captured some of Sitting Bull’s followers and took them to a camp, demanded their rifles, and fighting broke out In the end over 300 Sioux men, women, and children were dead

At end of Indian Wars: Population was only 250,000 down from 2.5 million when Columbus arrived

Define imperialism. In the 19 th century, the American government engaged in imperialist type activities when they forced Native Americans off of their land on to reservations in the west. Was this removal justified? How is what happened to the Native Americans like the “White Man’s Burden”? Give evidence to back up your arguments! 3.8 Format
