PURPOSES 1.To set up a self-access reading programme and promote independent student work. 2.To cater for students’ diversity in reading abilities. 3.To assess and analyse students’ reading achievement and progress.

Training Phase 1.Placement (15-20 minutes) 4. Independent Practice (daily / weekly / morning / after lunch…) 6 pb~85%+ scores Move up a level 2. Introduce power builders/skill builders (35-40 minutes) 6. Student conference / Evaluation (2-3 months) 3. Introduce SQR Strategies (35-40 minutes) 7. Reinforce Needed skills IMPLEMENTATION IN SCHOOL 5. Progress Check / level re-set (rate builder / quiz)

Achievements 1. Teachers could identify students’ needs. 2. Teachers could design effective teaching strategies. 3. When students read 1 power builder a week, they could read 12 short stories in 3-5 months. They could complete 4-6 colour levels a year. 4. Students could manage the SQR techniques as they read a text or book that is unfamiliar to them. 5. It is a cross-years independent reading programme.
