Telescope Network News Yerkes June 26, 2006

New Telescope Network: Based on RTML Perth/RAE is working! More can easily join -- HOU has either significant time or interest in linking to the following telescopes: Clarion University -- Perth, Australia Jackson State INO -- Mesa, Ariizona Ironwood Sonoma State

Networks of Networks RTML may make it easier: SkyNet WKU Net Las Cumbres

Las Cumbres Network: Las Cumbres Observatory is building a Global Telescope Network at ideal locations with spaced latitudes and longitudes so the entire night sky will be visible all day every day. Both for scientific and educational use, these telescopes will all be controlled remotely with high quality instrumentation.

Two Telescopes: Faulkes Telescope North (FTN) and Faulkes Telescope South (FTS):

More Las Cumbres: Currently, LCOGT has two 2 meter telescopes that are currently operated in Cardiff by the Faulkes Telescope Project; one on Haleakala, Maui and the other at Siding Spring Observatory, Australia. We also have three to five more 2 meter telescopes in the designing phase with possible locations such as Chile, South Africa, Canary Islands, China, and the UK. These two meter telescopes will primarily be used for scientific research, but will still have room for educational uses as well!

Even More Las Cumbres: The educational network is going to be made of at least twenty telescopes ranging in size from 16 inches to one meter at ideal locations. They all will be equipped with CCD cameras, as well as spectrographs and possible capabilities for infrared viewing on the one meter telescopes. Online will be a vast library of resources for classroom and group activities and telescope projects along with links to our several affiliated groups. These activities will not only promote the exciting science of astronomy, but will create links between other sciences such as physics, geology, biology, chemistry, and engineering as well as showing connections between astronomy and art and literature.

Last Las Cumbres: The online resources are available and free to everyone. To use the telescopes you must be registered with us (free of charge). The network of telescopes should be up and running in the next year or two and information will be posted online as to the progress. We are trying to start up a newsletter that you will be able to subscribe to that will send out updates and information.
