Module 5 Lesson 25 Express whole number fractions
on the number line when the unit interval is 1.

End Subtract by 6 Sprint 2 minutes
This ‘sand timer’ will start on a mouse click anywhere on the slide. The ‘sand’ will drain from the top section to the lower section and when completed will show the word ‘End’. To change the timings of this timer, you need to enter the animation settings, and change the timings for the Isosceles Triangles. There will be 2 that need changing (to the same amount) – one animates the top triangle emptying, whilst the other animates the bottom triangle filling. When you change the timings these have to entered as a number of seconds. End

Write Equal Fractions 0 = ?/5 1 = ?/5 2 = ?/5 3 = ?/5 4 = ?/5 0 = 0/5
1 2 3 4 0 = ?/5 1 = ?/5 2 = ?/5 3 = ?/5 4 = ?/5 0 = 0/5 1 = 5/5 2 = 10/5 3 = 15/5 4 = 20/5

It takes Lincoln 8 days to drink a gallon of milk.
Problem of the Day Lincoln drinks 1 eighth gallon of milk every morning. How many days will it take Lincoln to drink 1 gallon of milk? Use a number line and words to explain your answer. 1/8 = 1 day 1 8/8 = 8 days It takes Lincoln 8 days to drink a gallon of milk.

It takes Lincoln 16 days to drink two gallons of milk.
Problem of the Day Lincoln drinks 1 eighth gallon of milk every morning. How many days will it take Lincoln to drink 2 gallons? Extend your number line to show 2 gallons and use words to explain your answer. 1 2 1/8 = 1 day 8/8 = 8 days 16/8 = 16 days It takes Lincoln 16 days to drink two gallons of milk.

Please draw the following template on your white board.
Concept Development Please draw the following template on your white board.
7
Concept Development Each rectangle represents whole.
Partition the first rectangle into thirds, and write the whole as a fraction below it. 3/3 is equal to how many wholes? 3/3 = 1 whole 3/3
8
Concept Development Each rectangle represents whole.
Partition the second rectangle into halves, and label the whole as a fraction below it. 3/3 = 1 whole 2/2 is equivalent to how many wholes? 2/2 = 1 whole 2/2
9
Concept Development Each rectangle represents a whole.
Now partition the third rectangle into wholes. How are we going to label this whole as a fraction? 3/3 = 1 whole 2/2 = 1 whole Oh wait! This rectangle is already a whole! 1/1 = 1 whole
10
Start by marking each number line with the endpoints 0 and 1.
Concept Development Let’s look at equivalent fractions we’ve written for 1 on the number line. Start by marking each number line with the endpoints 0 and 1. 3/3 = 1 whole 2/2 = 1 whole 1/1 = 1 whole 1
11
Concept Development 3/3 = 1 whole 2/2 = 1 whole 1/1 = 1 whole thirds 1
Now represent each rectangle on a different number line. Partition, label and rename each whole below the line. 3/3 = 1 whole 2/2 = 1 whole 1/1 = 1 whole thirds 1/3 2/3 3/3 halves 1/2 2/2 whole 1/1 1
12
Concept Development 2 wholes are in each model.
Let’s try it again … Erase and redraw your white board like this. Each rectangle represents 1 whole. How many wholes are in each model? 2 wholes are in each model.
13
Concept Development Partition the first model into thirds,
the second into halves, and the third model into wholes.
14
Now, work with your partner to label each model.
Concept Development Now, work with your partner to label each model. 6/3 = 2 wholes 4/2 = 2 wholes 2/1 = 2 wholes
15
Now let’s label the number lines according to these models.
Concept Development Now let’s label the number lines according to these models. 6/3 = 2 wholes 4/2 = 2 wholes 2/1 = 2 wholes thirds 0/3 1/3 2/3 3/3 4/3 5/3 6/3 halves 0/2 1/2 2/2 3/2 4/2 wholes 0/1 1/1 2/1
