South Camden Community School Located in Somerstown, Kings Cross – high levels of socio- economic deprivation. Majority of students entitled to Free School Meals 800+ students, comprehensive secondary school 94% of students speak English as an Additional Language (EAL). Over 50 different languages are spoken by students 1 in 4 students are refugees 95% of students are Muslim

Why? In 2008 the use of the word gay as a derogatory term was increasing Students interviewed in PSHEE & Citizenship expressed homophobic views A number of LGBT staff had joined the school and felt it was important to lead a piece of work on challenging homophobia and celebrating diversity

The Beginnings Whole school assembly on challenging homophobia Group of students worked with a facilitator to look at the issue and develop an action plan

The Respect Agenda Interested staff asked to join working party Suggestions made for celebrating diversity and challenging homophobia Improved use of inclusive resources/curriculum Student led INSET for staff (scripts devised and provided) School Values Whole school and tutor time assemblies

Where next for SCCS? Raise the profile of the work Roll out programme of student training Continue and improve Respect Week and LGBT History Month Ensure the work is part of the School Improvement Plan Improve monitoring of homophobic incidents Extend work to include parents and primary schools
