Historical Costume meets Rock Chic 2008 Unit 3

For the June 2008 paper you should research a range of images associated with and inspired by ‘historical costume meets rock chic’. Consider how these images may be incorporated into original performance outfits for concerts, theatre, shows, films or other events. You should research a range of fabrics and components appropriate to this context.

The question paper is almost certainly going to be very similar to this. Study the number of marks available for each part. Research & plan thoroughly & you can pick up marks very easily in this exam. It is not just about drawing ideas… there is more to it.

On Sheet 1 in the exam, you will have to… Loads of innovative ideas need sketching quickly. Add lots of written notes to explain your ideas – describe the garment; explain the historical/rock chic influences; say if it is film, stage, concert, etc. This shows that you are meeting the specification set. Suggest fabrics…proper fabrics, not just fibre names.

On Sheet 2 in the exam you will have to… Show a final presentation drawing – back & front view, colour, written information. Drawings & notes to show how the product will be constructed. (mini pattern drafts – when you have prepared some sketches, before the exam, ask for help in working out the drafts). Details of fabrics & components

Vivienne Westwood – historical themes

Vivienne Westwood does a quirky take on historical

This Vivienne Westwood design uses the idea of many petticoats, as worn in the Victorian era, and the 1950’s look of circular skirts with layers of petticoats. Making the skirt very short gives it a modern twist and a good dramatic shape for a performance outfit.

Aman Copland Historical features that may be of interest… Corsets Victorian & 1950’s full skirts Edwardian ‘S’ bend ‘Gibson girl’ shape – pronounced bust, tiny waist & exaggerated bottom 1960’s mini dress 1960’s & 70’s hippy style 1947 Dior’s New Look 1970’s glam rock 1900’s Moulin Rouge cabaret

Characterised by black elegance and sophisticated details, this is the Liliza label. Designer Elisa Uberti is from Medway and Roubaix in France. Liliza aims to produce ready to wear garments for young women. She draws inspiration from iconic periods in history such as glam rock, the dandies, early 1900 and the cabaret. www.liliza.com A Rock chic/historical website I found, which may inspire you…
