To use William Paley's comparison of the world to a watch to aid in the understanding of the design argument. William Paley = A British Christian 18 th century philosopher

GRADE C Will be able to make links and describe Paley’s comparison of a watch to the world. GRADE B Will be able to identify the reasons why Paley came to the conclusions he did. GRADE A/A* Will be able to disprove Paley’s theory through counter-arguments. GRADE C Will be able to make links and describe Paley’s comparison of a watch to the world. GRADE B Will be able to identify the reasons why Paley came to the conclusions he did. GRADE A/A* Will be able to disprove Paley’s theory through counter-arguments.

William Paley and the WATCH William Paley was a philosopher who used the idea of a WATCH to explain why he believed God created the world. So what was Paley’s argument….? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmlABIuz0MY

HAVE A GO… Can you work out PALEY’S argument? IN PENCIL (just in case) make links between the following words to attempt to grasp Paley’s argument… WATCH WORLD DESIGNER GOD

William Paley and the WATCH Watch the following video… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9RIC-9hbUI Make any corrections to your LINKS DIAGRAM in GREEN PEN.

ORDER in the WORLD What examples of ORDER are there in the world? (discuss for 2 minutes with the person next to you) The 4 seasons The ozone layer The atmosphere GRAVITY The earth’s orbit of the sun The earth’s distance from the sun The water cycle

If something has a PURPOSE it must have a DESIGNER...

Example… Explain how the human body might be an example of Paley’s theory. Some people (including Paley) argue that the body is so unique and works so well that it must have had a designer… Christians believe this to be God.

If something has been designed it must have a designer – the only thing omnipotent enough to be this designer is God.

Complete PAGE 4 QUESTION of your REVISION WORKBOOK.

17 No Way…It sure was… Think of what we have looked at over the past two lessons. Can you come up with TWO arguments FOR and TWO arguments AGAINST. I DISAGREE because… I AGREE because… No omnibenevolent God would have designed a world with natural evil (e.g. Volcanoes, earthquakes etc...) The world is far too complex to have happened by accident – it must have a designer (e.g. Laws of science such as gravity, DNA, the human body, the human eye etc...) Science can explain the appearance of design without needing God. (e.g. Darwin’s theory of evolution/ natural selection/ survival of the fittest) Order cannot come from chaos – the world is too ordered to not have been designed. (e.g. The 4 seasons, the earths atmosphere, the water cycle etc…) Even if the world does have a designer – why does this designer have to be God? (e.g. There may be a being more powerful or more knowing that is capable of such design) If something has been designed it must have a designer – the only thing omnipotent and omniscient enough to be this designer is God. Do you think that the only logical explanation for the design of the world is God?

No Way…It sure was… Think of what we have looked at over the past two lessons. Can you come up with TWO arguments FOR and TWO arguments AGAINST. Do you think that the only logical explanation for the design of the world is God? Use the pictures on pxx of your booklet to complete the “No way” column. You have already got the “It sure was” points through answering the exam question
