1 6 Kingdoms!

2 Binomial nomenclature
Warm-up #5- September 2nd Match the following: Write out your answers, do not just put the letter! Grouping objects or information based on similarities. Naming system that gives each organism a two-word name. Developed the first system of classification. Branch of biology that groups and names organisms. Designed a system of classifying organisms based on their physical and structural similarities. Consists of a group of similar species. Aristotle Linnaeus Genus Classification Taxonomy Binomial nomenclature

3 1. How many cells do Archaea have?
Warm-up 1. How many cells do Archaea have? 2. What makes Fungi different from Protists? 3. What sets Animalia apart from all other kingdoms of organisms? 4. Which kingdom contains some species that share characteristics with Plantae? 5. Is there anything you are still unsure about? 6. What is helping you learn the best thus far?

4 Characteristics of the Kingdoms
Fill out the Chart as we go along.

5 Important Definitions:
Prokaryote “without nucleus”- no nucleus, free floating DNA Eukaryote “true nucleus”- has nucleus Autotroph makes own food- example? Heterotroph consumes food to get energy- example? Unicellular one cell Multicellular Many cells

6 Characteristics of 6 Kingdoms

7 BrainPop! 6 kingdoms!

8 Eubacteria Cell nucleus? – Number of cells? – Moves? –
Prokaryote Number of cells? – Unicellular Moves? – some do, some do not Makes Food? (Write under general description) – Autotroph or heterotroph General description – Microscopic, have cell walls made of peptidoglycan. Examples – Bacteria, blue-green algae, Streptococcus, E. coli.

9

10 Archaebacteria Cell nucleus? – Number of cells? – Moves? –
Prokaryote Number of cells? – Unicellular Moves? – some do, some do not Makes Food? – Autotroph or heterotroph General description – Anaerobic, microscopic; cell walls not made of peptidogolycan. Examples – Methanogens, halophiles

11

12 Protista Kingdom Cell nucleus? – Number of cells? – Moves? –
yes; Eukaryote Number of cells? – Unicellular or multicellular. Moves? – The majority do. Makes Food? – Autotroph or heterotroph General description – simple and very tiny; cell walls; some conduct photosynthesis Examples – Euglena, Amoeba, Paramecium

13

14 Fungi Kingdom Cell nucleus? – Number of cells? – Moves? –
Yes; Eukaryote Number of cells? – Multicellular Moves? – No Makes Food? – Heterotroph General description – Somewhat plant-like with no chlorophyll ; have cell walls. Examples – Yeasts, molds, and mushrooms.

15

16 Plant Kingdom Cell nucleus? – Number of cells? – Moves? –
Yes; Eukaryote. Number of cells? – Multicellular Moves? – No Makes Food? – Autotroph General description – Contains a cell wall and chloroplasts; does photosynthesis; rectangle shaped cell. Examples – algae, mosses, ferns, gymnosperms, angiosperms

17

18 Animal Kingdom Cell nucleus? – Number of cells? – Moves? –
Yes; Eukaryote Number of cells? – Multicellular Moves? – Yes; Organisms with the most mobility (movement). Makes Food? – Heterotroph General description – No cell walls; no chloroplast. The most advanced forms of life - depends on plants for food. Examples – Jellyfish, earthworms, frogs, dogs, cats, 11th and 12th grade students 
