1 Welcome to Calibre! Calibre is free software that allows you to turn your computer into a hub for all your e-book and e-publishing needs. This tutorial is designed to guid you through some of the basic and usefull functions of this powerful e-reader tool.

2 This is the Calibre window. All your e-books will be listed at the center of this, the library window. Books are listed in the order by which they are added.

3 To get started publishing an e-book, open up a word processor and either type a document, or open an existing document. E-Publishing with Calibre:

4 When you are ready to publish your document, select “file” and “Save As…”

5 Name your document and select a save to location where you will be able to find the document easily. IMPORTANT: Save your file as an HTML document.

6 With Calibre open, select the document you just saved and drag and drop it into your Calibre library. New imports will appear at the top of your library list.

7 To publish your document as an e-book, first select the document.

8 Next, from the “Convert Books” menu at the top of the Calibre window, select “Convert Individually”.

9 Certain HTML files will appear as ZIP files. This is normal. Under the output format drop-down menu, select MOBI for kindles and EPUB for iOS devices (iPods/iPads).

10 When the Jobs processing indicator at the bottom right of the window indicates “0”, your file has been converted. All available formats a file is in will be listed to the right under the book icon.

11 To output the e-book to a e-reader device, first, connect the device. Once connected, a “Devices” menu will appear at the top of the Calibre window shown above. Output e-book to e-reader

12 Right click the book(s) you wish to move to your e-reader device. Select send to device”, and “Send to main memory” When Jobs counter reads zero, the document has been transferred.

13 When the desired documents have transferred to your e-reader device, select the devices menu, select “eject this device and wait for the devices menu to disappear. It is now safe to disconnect your e-reader device.

14 Sharing an e-book by e-mail. First, select the e-book(s) you wish to share and click the menue at the top of the Calibre window marked “Connect/Share”. Select “Set up email based sharing of books.”

15 Click the Green add email button and add the email addresses of all persons/students you wish to distribute your email to. Leave “auto send” unchecked. Double click formats to specify which file formats are sent.

16 Mail server information can be obtained from your school’s/districts IT department, OR you can set up Calibre to work with hotmail or gmail IF your school/district does NOT have a policy against use of personal emails for classroom purposes.

17 Once you have input your email server info, and all intended recipients, click “Apply” located at the top of the window. Your e-book will be distributed by email.
