TYPOGRAPHY - DFP b7 Distinguish between serif and sans serif fonts Objective: Given resource material/lecture, the student will identify both serif and sans serif fonts with 100% accuracy.

What is a font? Complete set of type of a particular face, style, and point size. Question: How many are there? Websites to search

Serif Characters that are vary in thickness and have a stroke that projects from the top or bottom of the main stroke of the character. Note: studies show that serif fonts provide visual clues to direct the reader’s eye from one character to the next, making serif fonts easier to read.

Sans Serif Characters that are uniform in thickness and do not have serifs.

Script Characters that look like handwriting, hand lettering or calligraphy

Decorative Characters that are ornamental

GUIDELINES Do not use more than two fonts in a layout! Serifs for large body copy Sans serif to convey messages Script fonts for festive moods Decorative used only for a few words

Class Assignment Use identifont.com to identify each of these fonts. Write the name of the font to the right of the text in the appropriate number. Once you have all 8 fonts identified, turn in for evaluation. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8
