Outline Background Environment and Safety Board Design Panels –Music Panel –Create-a-Picture –Memory Game –Communications Panel –Hand Crank Game –Sensory Panel Budget Timeline Napoli, Smith, Wakefield
3
Background – Adam’s Adventure Adams Adventure is a non-profit organization dedicated to building a playground where children of all abilities can have fun It is aimed at children with autism spectrum disorders, cognitive impairments, visual impairments, hearing impairments, and more Napoli, Smith, Wakefield
4
Background – The Project The organization has asked us to design and build a sensory board for a playground being built in Tolland, CT This sensory board is going to act as an interactive wall that will include several games and activities for children of all backgrounds The focus is to create a safe and friendly environment in which children with disabilities can enjoy what most children already have Napoli, Smith, Wakefield
5
Environment and Safety ENVIRONMENT Playground equipment is outdoors 24/7 All electronics must be housed securely within the panels so they do not get wet or damaged by the environment or animals SAFETY It must follow the guidelines set by the CPSC and ADA –Must be safe for children –Rounded corners, no protrusions, etc. Napoli, Smith, Wakefield
6
Board Design The final design will be a 12 ft long, 4 ft tall and 5 in thick board positioned at angles. The panels on the ends of the board will be slightly shorter so that children in wheelchairs will be able to roll underneath them and have an opportunity to enjoy all of the activities. Napoli, Smith, Wakefield
7
Memory Game The memory game is aimed toward children who may suffer from an autism spectrum disorder. –Children with these disorders typically have an underdeveloped hippocampus in the limbic system which deals mostly with memory. The game will consist of a circle of 6 buttons. When children press start a random button in the circle will light up and once the child has pressed that button another will be added to the sequence. Napoli, Smith, Wakefield
8
Communication Panel This panel is dedicated to children who are blind or anyone who wants something new to learn. There will be two boards, one with the Braille alphabet and the other with riddles. The riddles will be in both standard alphabet and Braille, however only the answers will be in braille. Napoli, Smith, Wakefield
9
Music Panel This panel is comprised of a set of chimes and a keyboard Chimes are contained entirely within the panel and do not require a mallet to produce a sound Key board is in the shape of a musical scale. Children will be able to press one of three buttons and will be showed how to produce a song based on what keys they need to press –This allows for deaf children to still participate in the use of this panel Napoli, Smith, Wakefield
10
Create-A-Picture This panel allows children to show their creative side There will be a 15 x 15 grid of square buttons that can illuminate any of three different color options –A switch will be available to the side for children to select a color –Subsequent pressing of a button will cause the button to illuminate the selected color This panel will use a microcontroller and circuitry Napoli, Smith, Wakefield
11
Sonar Panel A child will move in front of a sensor and it will detect him or her, and a circle of LEDs will then light up There will be five sensors spread out on the panel, with LEDs around each one Each sensor has a range of 3 ft Napoli, Smith, Wakefield
12
Hand Crank Game This is a game in which children turn the crank, and it lights up a meter, bit by bit It allows even handicapped children to use their arms’ motor skills It will use a hand crank generator, a microcontroller, and some circuitry Napoli, Smith, Wakefield
13
Budget $2000 from UCONN School of Engineering $1000 from UCONN Biomedical Engineering Department Approximately $2700 still left Anticipated costs –HDPE –LEDs –Braille printing –Push Buttons Napoli, Smith, Wakefield
